This Cookie Policy explains how TakeawaysNearMe.ie uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit our website. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy. We are committed to using cookies transparently and only where justified.

1. What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files placed on your device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) by websites you visit. They are widely used to make websites function correctly, to remember your preferences, and to provide website operators with information about how their site is used.

Cookies can be session cookies (deleted automatically when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (which remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them). They can also be first-party (set directly by TakeawaysNearMe.ie) or third-party (set by external services we use).

2. Legal Framework

In Ireland, the use of cookies is governed by:

  • S.I. No. 336/2011— European Communities (Electronic Communications Networks and Services) (Privacy and Electronic Communications) Regulations 2011 (“Irish ePrivacy Regulations”), which transpose the EU Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive (2002/58/EC, as amended by 2009/136/EC) into Irish law. Regulation 5(3) of these Regulations requires that prior informed consent be obtained before placing non-essential cookies on a user's device.
  • Regulation (EU) 2016/679— the GDPR, which sets the standard for valid consent (freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous) applicable to cookie consent.

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) is the Irish supervisory authority responsible for enforcement of both the ePrivacy Regulations and the GDPR in Ireland.

Under the Irish ePrivacy Regulations, two categories of cookies are exempt from the consent requirement (Regulation 5(5)):

  • Strictly necessary cookies: cookies that are essential to provide an online service explicitly requested by the user (e.g. keeping you logged in to your account)
  • Communications cookies: cookies whose sole purpose is to carry out a transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network

All other cookies require your prior, freely given, informed, and unambiguous consent before they are placed on your device. Pre-ticked boxes and implied consent through browsing are not sufficient under Irish law. The DPC recommends that cookie consent be renewed at least every 6 months.

3. Cookies We Use

TakeawaysNearMe.ie sets a minimal number of strictly necessary, first-party cookies. We do not set advertising cookies, behavioural tracking cookies, or analytics cookies.

Cookie NameTypePurposeDurationConsent Required?
sb-*-auth-tokenStrictly necessarySupabase authentication session token — keeps you securely logged in to your accountUp to 7 daysNo — exempt under Regulation 5(5)(b) of S.I. 336/2011

These cookies are set only if you create an account and log in. If you use TakeawaysNearMe.ie without logging in, no first-party cookies are set by our website.

These cookies do not track your browsing behaviour across other websites, serve advertisements, or collect personal data beyond what is necessary for the login function.

4. Third-Party Cookies

Some pages on TakeawaysNearMe.ie embed content or services from third parties, which may set their own cookies on your device. We do not control these cookies and they are subject to the respective third party's own cookie policies.

ServiceCookie CategoryPurposeConsent Required?Cookie Policy
Google MapsFunctional / Non-essentialInteractive maps displayed on outlet detail pages and the “Near Me” proximity feature; Google may use cookies to improve map performance and, where permitted, for usage measurementYes — see Section 5Google Cookie Policy

We do not currently use any analytics platforms (such as Google Analytics, Plausible, or similar) that would set additional cookies. If this changes, we will update this policy and implement an appropriate consent mechanism before any such cookies are set.

5. Google Maps & Consent

Google Maps is embedded on individual outlet detail pages and powers the “Near Me” feature. When a Google Maps embed loads, Google may set cookies on your device that fall outside the strict necessity exemption under Regulation 5(5) of the Irish ePrivacy Regulations. These are therefore non-essential cookies for which your prior consent is required under Irish law.

We use Cookiebot as our consent management platform. When you first visit TakeawaysNearMe.ie, a cookie consent banner is displayed. Google Maps and any other non-essential cookies are blocked until you give your consent. You can change or withdraw your consent at any time by clicking the cookie icon or visiting your cookie preferences.

You may also manage Google's cookies through your browser settings or via Google's Cookie Policy and Google's Ads Settings.

6. Managing Cookies

You have the right to control cookies on your device. You can manage cookies in the following ways:

6.1 Browser Settings

Most modern browsers allow you to view, block, or delete cookies. Please note that blocking or deleting strictly necessary cookies (such as our authentication cookies) will prevent you from logging in to your TakeawaysNearMe.ie account. Browser instructions:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari (Mac/iOS)
  • Microsoft Edge

6.2 Google-Specific Controls

To manage cookies set by Google Maps or other Google services, you can use:

  • Google Ads Settings
  • Google Account Privacy Controls
  • The cookie controls available in your browser settings for google.com and maps.google.com domains

6.3 Consent Renewal

In line with DPC guidance, Cookiebot is configured to renew your cookie consent every 6 months. You can also update your preferences at any time via the cookie consent banner.

7. Changes to This Policy

We will update this Cookie Policy if we introduce new cookies, change our cookie practices, or if there are relevant changes in applicable law. We will provide appropriate notice of material changes before they take effect. Any new non-essential cookies will only be set after we have implemented an appropriate consent mechanism and obtained your prior consent.
